How to Turn On an Exclusive Subscription

Written by Jordan Blake

Creators can now launch their own Exclusive Subscription directly from the Offers tab. This gives you more control over pricing, access, and how new subscribers join your content—without disrupting your existing Platform (non-exclusive) subscribers.

This article walks through who this applies to, what happens when you enable Exclusive, and how to encourage your audience to switch.

Who Can Turn On an Exclusive Subscription

Any creator who currently runs a Platform Subscription can enable an Exclusive Subscription. There's nothing you need to apply for or request—this option is available directly in your creator tools.

What Happens When You Enable Exclusive

1. You'll See the Option in Offers

When you visit Offers in the creator dashboard, you'll see a new option to start an Exclusive Subscription.

Once selected, you'll be guided through what this change means for both you and your subscribers.

2. You'll Review Education and Strategy Tips

Before launching, you'll see education explaining:

  • How Exclusive subscriptions work

  • What happens to new vs. existing subscribers

  • How to think about your content mix and rollout strategy

This is designed to help you make informed decisions before going live.

3. You'll Set Pricing and Free Trials

Next, you'll:

  • Set the price for your Exclusive Subscription (see additional pricing strategy here)

  • Configure any free trials you'd like to offer

Free trials can be turned on independently for Monthly and Annual — you can offer a trial on one plan type, both, or neither. Turning a trial on for Annual does not automatically turn it on for Monthly (and vice versa).

These settings apply only to your Exclusive Subscription.

4. Your Exclusive Subscription Goes Live

Once launched:

  • All future checkouts will be for the Exclusive Subscription

  • Existing Platform subscribers stay on Platform (nothing changes for them automatically)

You're now officially offering both Platform and Exclusive subscriptions.

Managing What Each Subscription Includes

After launch, you can manage what's included in each subscription directly from Offers.

Content and Features

  • All Programs currently remain enabled for Exclusive subscriptions

  • Community, Direct Messages, and Livestreaming can be toggled on or off independently for:

    • Platform Subscriptions

    • Exclusive Subscriptions

This gives you flexibility to differentiate value between the two.

Encouraging Subscribers to Switch to Exclusive

You have two ways to guide users toward your Exclusive Subscription.

1. Copy a Link

You can copy a direct link to your Exclusive Subscription and share it anywhere you'd like.

2. Send Push Notifications

You can also send up to 2 push notifications total to encourage subscribers to switch.

Important things to know:

  • There is a maximum of 2 push notifications

  • There are no timing restrictions—you choose when to send them

  • Notifications can be customized with your own messaging

  • Push notifications appear as coming from Playbook

We recommend only sending push notifications after you've clearly defined your content strategy for Exclusive.

What Subscribers See When They Join

When someone taps your Exclusive link or push notification, they'll be taken to a join screen showing two options.

Option 1: Switch to Exclusive (top option from screenshot below)

This option immediately switches their subscription:

  • Their Platform subscription is canceled right away

  • Any remaining value on their Platform subscription is prorated and applied to Exclusive

  • Monthly Platform → Monthly Exclusive

  • Annual Platform → Annual Exclusive

This works like an upgrade.

Option 2: Keep Platform + Add Exclusive (bottom option from screenshot above)

This option allows them to:

  • Keep their existing Platform subscription

  • Add Exclusive as an additional subscription

Both subscriptions remain active.

Key Things to Keep in Mind

  • Turning on Exclusive does not affect current Platform subscribers unless they choose to switch

  • All new subscribers will check out on Exclusive going forward

  • You should think intentionally about your content mix before promoting the switch

  • Push notifications are powerful—use them strategically

If you're unsure how to structure Platform vs. Exclusive, start small and adjust over time.

FAQ:

  1. Will my current subscribers be forced to pay the new price?

No, nothing changes for their pricing and their access to the broader platform. See phase 2 if you want to upsell to a higher price point.

  2. What changes in payouts?

Exclusive offer annual payouts will be disbursed in the first month - no amortized payout. You will be essentially receiving all exclusive annuals up front, and all platform annuals amortized (paid monthly).

  3. What happens to my checkout page?

    Automatically reflects the new pricing.

  4. What happens to my landing page?

You will need to change your website verbiage to reflect the correct pricing.

  5. Followers: someone that is not subscribed to you but "follows" you and does your workouts. What happens to them?

If someone follows you, but is not subscribed to you, they still see your content.

  6. If someone is on an old monthly subscription pricing and upgrades to annual AFTER the prices rise, do they upgrade to the new annual price?

Yes, if someone is on an old monthly subscription pricing and upgrades to annual AFTER the prices rise, they upgrade to the new annual price.

  7. Who else sees my content?

Known users - these are users on the platform who follow at least 1 creator.

  8. Am I searchable in discovery?

No. Only to the people who follow you/are subscribed to you.

  9. Can I turn my 7 day free trial off?

Yes, but not recommended. You can turn the trial off for Monthly, Annual, or both — each plan's trial setting is controlled independently.

  10. A user of mine can't view my locked content. Why is this happening?

These cases are rare, but to resolve, simply send the user any Playbook deep link (your creator page, your program link, etc.).
