How Users Upgrade to Annual
Users can upgrade in the Playbook consumer app.
Steps to Upgrade
Open the Playbook app and go to the Profile tab.
Tap Manage next to "My Subscriptions."
Select Upgrade to Annual.
If applicable, enter a discount code.
Confirm the upgrade.
In addition to the Profile → Manage path above, monthly subscribers will also see an "UPGRADE TO ANNUAL" banner they can tap on directly inside their workout experience — for example, inside a program or challenge they're actively working through — to accomplish the same goal. This banner appears automatically if a user is a paying monthly subscriber to your channel.
Once confirmed, the user is immediately charged for the annual price (with any applied discount), and their new 12-month billing cycle begins right away.
How Billing Works When Upgrading Mid-Month
When a monthly subscriber upgrades to an annual plan:
Their stored payment method is charged immediately.
The annual payment is prorated based on the user's remaining unused subscription time from their previous monthly billing cycle.
Their billing cycle renews 12 months later at full price.
The upgrade replaces the monthly plan on the day the user confirms the annual purchase.
Can Monthly Users Upgrade Using a Checkout Page?
Checkout pages and promo links can be used for new subscribers or cancelled users who are resubscribing using a promo code, but this is not the path for existing monthly users upgrading to annual.
There are two methods by which current monthly subscribers and 7-day trial monthly users can upgrade to an annual:
1. Consumer app: (Profile → Manage → Upgrade to Annual). View screenshots of this process here.
2. Web profile (my.playbookapp.io/login): (My Subscriptions → Upgrade to Annual → Enter discount code → Click OK).
Annual Subscribers and Discounted Annual Offers
An existing annual subscriber cannot apply an annual discount to their active term. They must wait until their current annual term ends and ensure the discount code is active.
If an annual subscriber wants to take advantage of an annual discount, they must:
Cancel their annual plan so it does not renew
Wait for their current annual billing cycle to fully expire
Resubscribe using the new annual discount
Annual subscriptions are not prorated or refunded mid-term.
Users Who Used an Annual Discount Last Year
If a user received a discounted annual plan last year and wants to take advantage of a new promotion this year, they must:
Allow the current annual billing cycle to end.
Subscribe again using the new annual promo link or code.
If a user chooses to renew next year for another billing cycle, the discount code will not be reapplied.
Trial Users Applying an Annual Discount
Monthly users who have a 7-day free trial can upgrade to annual at any time. Annual trial users cannot utilize an annual discount code.
They can enter a discount code before confirming the purchase
They are charged immediately
Their 12-month annual subscription begins immediately
The remaining trial days are not carried over or credited
FAQs
How does billing work if a user upgrades before their monthly cycle ends?
The annual payment is prorated based on the user's remaining unused subscription time from their previous monthly billing cycle. The annual cycle starts that same day.
Can a monthly user upgrade through a checkout page instead of in the app?
The upgrade can occur both in-app (Profile tab) and through their web profile (my.playbookapp.io/login). Checkout pages are intended for new subscribers and cancelled subscribers who are resubscribing, not for upgrading an active monthly subscription.
Can an annual subscriber cancel and sign up again with a discount?
Yes, but only after their current annual term fully ends. Annual plans are not prorated, and the user cannot apply an annual discount to an active term.
If a user had an annual discount last year, can they get it again this year?
No, once their current discounted annual billing cycle ends, their subscription will renew at full price.
If a user is on a free trial, can they use an annual discount?
Yes, monthly trial users can upgrade to an annual and apply a discount code. Their trial ends and they are charged for the annual plan immediately. Annual trial users cannot utilize an annual discount code.
What if the user forgets to add a discount code during the upgrade process?
If a user forgets to add a discount code during the upgrade process, please have the user reach out to [email protected] for further assistance.
If a user redeems the annual discount, do they get a 7-day free trial?
No, if a user redeems the annual discount, they do not receive a 7-day free trial.
If a monthly subscriber upgrades to annual, do they get a new 7-day free trial?
No. Upgrading doesn't grant a new trial — the user simply moves onto the annual plan and is charged immediately. Whether a trial applies at all depends on whether the creator has free trials enabled for their Annual plan specifically; monthly and annual trials are controlled independently by the creator, so having one enabled doesn't guarantee the other is.
