3 Instagram Best Practices to Grow Your Brand

Instagram Best Practices Guide

Written by Jordan Blake

If you’re looking to grow your audience and build an engaged community, Instagram is your holy grail.

But with so much content being posted daily, how do you stand out from other creators and monetize your content? Because let’s be real - you’re losing money if you're not generating income from social media.

We sat down with our friends at Instagram and got the inside scoop - the exclusive strategy that gets more eyes on your content - and we’re here to share it with you! This guide gives you the secrets to viral engagement, a loyal following, and of course more leads.

By following these easy-to-implement steps, you’ll be posting high-quality content that resonates with your target audience and establishes you as a consistent presence on Instagram.

#1: Recreate What Works

Start by searching your niche on the Instagram Explore page. Find 10 creators who have under 100K followers. Pay attention to what these micro-influencers post, how they engage, and what stands out about their content.

Scroll through their feed and pinpoint top-performing videos compared to their average content views. For example, if a video has 8 times their follower count, you’ve found a winner. These are the posts that resonated most with their audience.

Take note of common themes, hooks, or formats that made them successful so you can recreate them with your own unique insights and personality.

When analyzing these posts, ask:

  • What was the hook visual or verbal?

  • What topic did they cover?

  • What format did they use (carousel, Reel, static)?

  • How did they structure the video?

  • How long was the content (How many slides? Length of time?)

  • Did they use trending audio?

  • What and where was the call to action (CTA)?

Understanding these elements will help you craft content your target audience responds to.

#2: Put People First

The greater your engagement, the more the algorithm will favor you because engagement indicates that your content resonates with your audience. So you need to create content for them - your viewers.

Focus on content that solves your audience’s problems. Keep things concise and engaging, entertaining while delivering value. When you mix that with the right posting format, you’re guaranteed to engage them. So, what’s the right format?

Feed Posts

Your content is shown to a small number of people who are predicted to engage with it. If those people engage, Instagram will continue to show and recommend your content to other accounts.

If people keep engaging with your content, your content will be shown to more and more people. If, on the other hand, no one engages with your content, your reach becomes limited.

So, how does Instagram measure engagement?

To reach more followers, focus on getting more likes. To reach non-followers, encourage shares. While they’re not necessarily weighted differently, shares lead to more views, which leads to more engagement.

And be sure to use closed captions on the screen with your Reels. A high percentage of viewers watch with the sound off, so using captions makes your Reels more accessible to all viewers.

Post Captions

Captions are key to boosting engagement because they connect you with the right audience - the ones that your content resonates with. Enhancing your caption’s Search Engine Optimization (SEO) will make sure those who are searching for you find you.

Include SEO keywords in your captions and when you use hashtags. The more specific, the better. When it comes to hashtags, a best practice is keeping it to 4-6 that are truly relevant to your post.

Don’t forget to use a call to action (CTA) that prompts people to comment. You can ask a question related to the post or simply ask for your followers' opinions. Keep in mind that most people don’t read long captions, they only skim through. Try putting your CTA at the top of your caption to catch attention right away.

You can also use automation tools, like Manychat, to create automated DM responses when someone comments on your post. Since Instagram prioritizes organic engagement, you want to use Manychat sparingly so it doesn’t flood the comment sections with the same word, making it look spammy and harder for people to engage with, hurting your reach.

Stories

“For the vast majority of creators, posting to Feed is going to be the best way to reach as many people as possible because Stories are designed to connect people with their friends.”

- Adam Mosseri, Head of Instagram

Stories are a great way to connect with your followers if you use them intentionally. Random pictures or reposted Reels without context won’t perform well. Instead, use Stories to engage your audience.

The more engagement your stories get, the more you’ll show up in your followers’ Story display. Focus on views, likes, and replies to your Story. Use interactive polls, questions, and emoji responses to encourage your audience to respond.

By asking for opinions and feedback from viewers and sparking fun conversations, you make your followers feel heard, ensuring they come back for more.

Remember, to be successful in Stories, show up candidly and authentically, representing you and your brand!

#3: Stay Consistent

The more consistent you are with high-quality content, the more Instagram will reward you with reach and engagement.

While there’s no universal “best time” to post, you can check your insights to see when your audience is most active. If you want to do a deep dive into posting time, we recommend you check out this Buffer article.

To keep yourself consistent, come up with a weekly schedule that works for you. The first thing you want to schedule is a day to review insights from the previous week and outline content themes for the upcoming week. Next, make time to do your research (Step #1), write captions, and organize your ideas. You’ll also need to block time to script content and design carousel posts, bulk record video content and edit it, and finalize and schedule your posts.

The concept of consistency also applies to your theme. Use similar editing styles, formats, and overall aesthetics to keep things recognizable. People are creatures of habit so you want them to feel familiarity with your brand.

Be sure to test, tweak, and track your results so you know what’s working and can adjust as needed.

Conclusion

Mastering Instagram takes time, but with consistent and strategic posting, you can create content that gets viral engagement, grows your audience, and builds a strong brand.

Set yourself up for success by studying those in your niche who are already crushing it. Then, strategically post, providing valuable insights that your audience will respond to. Remember to be authentic and lean into your unique perspective when crafting content.

While no single hack can boost your engagement, understanding certain key factors that Instagram looks for while simultaneously nurturing your community will have you on the road to success in no time!
